Three smiling people pose indoors against a textured wall. A poster and coffee machine are visible. Casual attire and a cheerful mood.

Naples is a city where coffee isn’t just a drink—it’s a ritual, a point of pride, and a piece of cultural identity. Step into any bar and you’ll see locals sipping tiny cups of rich, syrupy espresso, exchanging quick words with the barista before moving on with their day. But at Caffè Sansone, I discovered a side of Neapolitan coffee I hadn’t expected: one that honors tradition while gently reimagining it for today.

I spent a morning with Vincenzo, the owner of Caffè Sansone, for a full coffee experience. From the moment I walked in, his passion for coffee was obvious. He doesn’t just serve it—he’s dedicated years to perfecting it.

When Vincenzo first opened his shop, he was serving a big-box Italian coffee brand, just like countless other cafés around town. But over time, he felt something was missing. He wanted a coffee that felt truly his own, something that carried the spirit of Naples but reflected his personal craft. So he started experimenting, blending, and roasting—always inviting locals to taste side by side, share notes, and help refine the process. After years of work, the signature Caffè Sansone blend was born: a coffee rooted in Neapolitan tradition, yet crafted with the care and detail you’d expect from specialty coffee.

During my visit, we tasted a variety of coffees paired with pastries, each sip and bite layering flavor on flavor. And then came the highlight: Vincenzo invited me off-site to their roastery. Walking in, the smell of freshly roasted beans was overwhelming in the best way. On display was their original small roaster—the humble machine that carried the earliest experiments of his coffee journey. Side by side with the larger roaster used today, it felt like a timeline of Sansone’s evolution: the roots and the future under one roof.

And perhaps the most surprising moment of all: after nearly a month of drinking espresso across Europe, Vincenzo prepared me a single-origin pour-over from Kenya. In Naples! The slow brew highlighted bright, fruity notes that stood in complete contrast to the thick, intense Neapolitan espresso I’d been drinking everywhere else. Sitting down with that cup was a revelation. It reminded me that Italian coffee, so often defined by tradition, can also embrace new methods and global flavors without losing its soul.

I left with more than just memories—I left with a bag of freshly roasted Sansone beans tucked into my bag, carrying a little piece of Naples home with me.

Not only did I experience a shop that’s evolving while still deeply rooted in its original culture, but I also had the chance to connect with a local coffee shop. Caffè Sansone isn’t one of the flashy spots you’ll find on a “Top 10 Things to Do in Naples” list (although it absolutely deserves to be). And that’s exactly what makes it so special.

In fact, I was so inspired by my time with Vincenzo that I’m now working with him to help more travelers experience the coffee roasting journey for themselves while visiting Naples. If you’re a coffee lover—or just curious to see Neapolitan tradition in a new light—this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

At Caffè Sansone, you get more than just a good cup of coffee. You get to taste the city’s traditions, see how they’re evolving, and meet the people who are keeping Naples’ coffee culture alive.
