Some trips are about exploring. Others are about escaping.

One afternoon in Naples, I realized I needed the second kind.

I’ve been to Ischia many times before. I know the island well — the winding roads, the views toward the Bay of Naples, the quiet rhythm that settles in once you leave the mainland behind. But this time wasn’t about discovering anything new.

It was simply about stepping away for a moment.

So I packed a small bag, checked the ferry schedule, and headed to the port.

A short ride across the water later, I stepped off the ferry in Ischia with almost no plan. No list of things to see. No itinerary. Just a hotel overlooking the sea and the intention to slow down for a day.

From the moment I arrived, the pace shifted.

Most of the afternoon was spent on the balcony of my room, writing while looking out over the water. Boats drifted slowly across the bay, and the light moved across the coastline in that soft Mediterranean way that makes it hard to feel rushed about anything.

Later I wandered down to the beach with a glass of crisp local white wine and let the afternoon stretch out. No schedule. No need to be anywhere.

Dinner that evening was at the hotel restaurant — simple, fresh food and the kind of setting where you linger longer than you planned.

The next morning, as I was checking out, something in me paused for a second.I asked the front desk if they happened to have availability for one more night. They did. So instead of heading back to Naples, I stayed.

That second day was even slower than the first. I spent more time writing on the balcony, wandered down to the beach again, and later visited the spa for a facial and a soak in the island’s famous thermal waters.

It was exactly the kind of reset I didn’t realize I needed.

Eventually I made my way back to Naples, but the extra day made the experience feel completely different. Sometimes the best travel decision you can make is the one that wasn’t planned at all.

If you're curious about the hotel where I stayed during that little escape, I wrote a full review here.
