Discovering Ischia: Capri’s Overlooked Sister Island

When travelers think of the Bay of Naples, Capri tends to steal the spotlight. It is iconic for a reason — but there is another island just across the water that deserves equal attention: Ischia.
I have visited multiple times over the years, and every trip feels different. While a lot of people head here for the famous thermal spas, what keeps me coming back is something much simpler: wandering. This island invites you to slow down. To stroll through sun-soaked piazzas, grab a perfect plate of pasta at a seaside restaurant, and take in sweeping views from medieval towers. It is a place that rewards curiosity more than planning.
What Makes Ischia Worth Visiting?
Ischia is deeply local — still a favorite summer getaway for Neapolitans. Compared to Capri or the Amalfi Coast, it is quieter, more relaxed, and surprisingly affordable. There is no pressure to “see it all.” You can just be here.
Of course, for those who want an itinerary, there is plenty to do: wellness resorts, boat trips, lush gardens, and that unforgettable castle climb (more on that below). But the magic of Ischia is that you do not need an agenda.
A Few Things I Recommend
While I tend to wander without much of a plan, there are a few standouts I always suggest to clients:
Aragonese Castle: One of my favorite things to do on the island. Climbing through the winding stairways and gardens of this ancient fortress leads to some of the best views in southern Italy. It is not just beautiful — it feels epic.
Coffee + Food: I have collected a handful of cozy coffee spots and casual restaurants I return to again and again. Most are family-run, all are delicious. I share a curated list of these with my clients based on where they are staying.
Where to Stay: Each town on Ischia has a different energy. I help match clients to the best area for their travel style — whether it is somewhere breezy and central like Ischia Porto or a tucked-away beach village like Sant’Angelo.
Thermal Spas: Though I am not much of a spa person myself, I have heard great things about Negombo and Poseidon. If a full day of soaking, swimming, and relaxing sounds like your ideal vacation day, you will be in good hands.
Slow Exploration: Honestly, my favorite thing to do here is just explore. Ischia is full of winding streets, secret staircases, lemon groves, and views that appear out of nowhere. You do not need much of a plan — just a good pair of shoes and some time.
When to Go & How to Get There
Ischia is best visited in late spring or early fall — especially May, June, or September. The weather is warm, the water is perfect for swimming, and the island is not overcrowded.
You can get there easily from Naples via ferry. The trip takes takes about an hour, depending on the boat and departure point.
Want to Add Ischia to Your Trip?
Whether you are already planning a visit to Capri or the Amalfi Coast, or just want to escape to somewhere quieter and more local, Ischia fits beautifully into a southern Italy itinerary. I would love to help you build something that combines the well-known with the unexpected.
