Even after years of traveling, I still get them—the butterflies that come just before a big trip. This week, as I prepare to spend ten weeks in Europe, that familiar mix of excitement and anticipation has settled in. It is not fear of the unknown so much as the awareness that, for the next couple of months, I will be navigating a world far from the rhythms of home.

Over time, I have learned that the best antidote to these pre-travel jitters is preparation—not frantic preparation, but thoughtful steps that create a sense of calm before I even step on the plane.

I keep a pre-travel checklist. It is not glamorous, but it is powerful. Adjusting my cellphone plan to work abroad, setting up automatic bill payments, notifying my bank of upcoming travel—each of these small actions quietly removes potential stressors from my journey. Crossing them off the list gives me confidence to leave home knowing that the everyday tasks I cannot take with me are taken care of.

There is a subtle shift that happens as I work through these steps. The nervous energy that might otherwise linger in the days before departure begins to settle. I notice myself breathing more easily, imagining the streets I will wander, the cafés I will sit in, the quiet moments I will treasure. It feels as though the journey has already begun, and I can arrive at my first destination both practically ready and mentally open.

Preparation does not eliminate the thrill of travel. Rather, it clears a space for it. By attending to the little things that are so easy to forget, I give myself permission to be fully present. Instead of worrying about what-ifs, I can focus on the experience itself—the conversations, the sights, the meals, and the discoveries that make travel so rewarding.

Travel is always a dance between planning and surrender. By setting yourself up for success before departure, you invite the adventure to unfold more fully. In that calm, confident space, the nerves transform into excitement, and the trip becomes everything you imagined—and more.

If you would like a personalized pre-travel checklist or one-on-one trip planning support, I would love to help.
